Fish Report Oct 2 (I change the fish report when the conditions change)
The weather has finally started to cool down a bit and the early mornings have seen some ice around the sprinklers. The flows are low as we didn't have a huge snow pack last winter and Mammoth Creek has gone dry but the creek is in good shape. The Caddis migration gets going around 9:30 and the fish are on them! The actual hatch happens mid afternoon. The best patterns right now are the grey para Caddis, E.C. Caddis, Hot Creek Caddis, low profile and para Caddis emerger all in size 20 and 22
The female Tricos are hatching between 9 and 9:30 with the spinners falling around 10:30. The best Trico patterns are the male and female comparaduns, sprout male trico and the organza spinners all in size 20 and 22.
The BWO hatch has been good from about 11 to 12:30. The flies we are doing the best with are all in size 20 and 22 and they are; para bwo, extended body bwo, para adams, sparkle dun, cdc dun and baetis sprout.
There are still a few PMDs around 11 to12:30 and lasting about an hour. The fish are still on them so be sure to have some in your box! We are using para PMD, cdc PMD, hairwing PMD all in size 14, 16. Folks are doing well on the Beetle and some success on the ant.
The Hoppers are around but not in the numbers we saw the last 2 years. It is still worth throwing a hopper in the afternoon when not much else is going on.
As always, the Fly Shop is well stocked with all of the best flies, leaders, tippet, gink, powder shake, and most anything else you will need to make the best of you day on the water. We also carry Tee shirts, Simms fishing shirts and hats, sun gloves, buffs and nets. For those of you who are new to spring creek fishing or might just want a “tune up”, we have the best guides in California to make it all happen.
We look forward to seeing you here at the ranch!
